Changes That 2023 Is Bringing To The Job Search Process was originally published on uConnect External Content.
If you’ve been in the job market since the 90s, you have definitely noticed a lot of changes in the job search process. From decade to decade, year to year, the system is changing, and people are changing too!
So what is so different about finding a job in 2023?
Well, a lot of things.
1️⃣ First and foremost, you have to have an online presence. Yes, your resume is important, and it needs to be professional-looking, but you won’t get far without an amazing LinkedIn profile. So make sure that you optimize your profile and stay active. Comment on other people’s posts, create your own content, reshare relevant content, and above else, provide value to your connections.
2️⃣ Secondly, networking is more important than ever before. With major tech companies firing thousands of people and when job security seems something that only exists in a fairy tale, you need to be connected, and you need to stay connected. The biggest mistake that people make is not networking while they are happily employed. That is exactly when you need to be networking. When you already need a job, it’s too late to build a network.
3️⃣ Thirdly, everything is virtual and online! You apply online, and you interview online. Get ready to interview via video calls, where gesturing and connecting might be different than before. You might want to implement some changes in how you present yourself. Yet, it can be easier for you to interview for more companies as you don’t have to go to their physical location.
4️⃣ Finally, we are bringing humanity back into the professional world. People are showing their true nature, and they are being vulnerable. Someone gets fired after working at a big company for ten years, and they talk about it honestly and share that they are struggling to accept that idea. Or someone quits after working in a toxic company and is talking all about it on LinkedIn. Just ten years ago, these would have been considered red flags, and today, people are responding with their support, offering help and even job opportunities. This is the change that I like the most.
How to find a job in 2023?
✅ Have a great-looking resume that is optimized with KEYWORDS – If you have a resume that isn’t customized for each role, you will get nowhere. If you are listing out your responsibilities and not showing any results, you are not presenting yourself in the best possible way.
✅ Optimize your LinkedIn profile – Nowadays, you are no one without a great LinkedIn profile. Use your storytelling skills, and create a story about yourself, find relevant keywords, and repeat them a couple of times. If you’re not sure how to do this, hire a professional. Don’t leave anything to chance.
✅ Reach out to your close professional contacts. Let them know you are looking for a new role, and ask if they know about an opening that could be suitable for you. Ask them to introduce you to someone who is important to your job search.
✅ Reach out to your not-so-close professional contacts. Perhaps you met someone five years ago during an industry event, and you added them on LinkedIn. Feel free to catch up and reach out. It will take a bit of your time to build up a rapport, but once that happens, you can also share that you are now looking for new opportunities.
✅ Reach out to people you have never met before – LinkedIn is the best place to network online. Everyone is on LinkedIn, and you can always message them or send a connection request. Make sure that you are authentic and genuine. Don’t send default messages to everyone. No one likes those. Reach out to someone and refer to something they have posted. Show your interest in them as a professional. Tell them your opinion, and ask questions. After a while, this person will become a part of your close professional contacts.
✅ Be yourself – Be authentic in your hiring process. Show your true nature during the interviews. Talk about values that you personally care about. Share what you wouldn’t like in a company culture or managerial style. Show your personality, even a bit of your sense of humor. If you are trying to present yourself as someone who you are not, you will just end up in a role that you are not happy with.
✅ Stay consistent – Sometimes, it can take a while. If you are someone who is looking for a very niche type of senior leadership role, it might take a year or more. Don’t give up, and don’t settle. You only need one yes.
The only constant in life is change. If you are someone who got used to a completely different process of hiring and finding a job, you will have to adjust. Let go of any resistance you may have about these changes, and go with the flow. Your flexibility will become your biggest asset.
