ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
You will be a part of a diverse team of engineers and scientists developing new materials for automotive and aerospace applications. In this role, you will support the entire development cycle including feedstock synthesis, sample fabrication, microstructure characterization, testing and analysis. Typical tasks for this job include new concept brainstorming, modeling and simulation (Matlab, CAD), fabrication of parts by 3D printing or other methods, microscopy and characterization, tensile testing with load frames, as well as data analysis.
As Materials Development Engineer, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing to improving soft and hard magnetic materials for electric motors. With more experience, the candidate can take on responsibilities including: writing patents, journal publications and proposals, and eventually managing research projects.
The candidate should have experience with planning, conducting and analyzing experiments. Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing equipment and techniques is a plus. Prior experience with post-processing methods including heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, and sintering is a plus. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g. metallographic polishing, microscopy) and testing is also a plus. In addition, the candidate should have creative problem solving skills and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.
Knowledge of the basic principles of materials is required. Prior programming background (e.g. Python) or experience in computer aided design (CAD) is a plus. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.
