Role: Immigration Writer
We are looking for Immigration Writers to join us as part of an internship with Latina Republic. We are a nonprofit organization with a dual mission: Latina Republic empowers Immigrants in the United States and advances Social Justice in Latin America.
Latina Republic offers an intensive hands-on training and mentoring program for our Immigration Writer Interns. It is designed to promote leadership, confidence, interviewing, translation, writing, storytelling and reporting skills with an emphasis on diversity of stories and local immigrant perspectives across the U.S.
Undergraduate students receive individually tailored mentoring through daily interactive coaching by the CEO, who is also an oral historian, former university professor and writer center manager. Through this rewarding program, we strive to bring diversity, equity and inclusion to our society by equipping the next generation of journalists, human rights advocates, immigration lawyers, NGO leaders, advocates, and public policy professionals. We challenge our interns to sharpen numerous skills, identify their passion, and have their work published. We are committed to diversifying the next generation of immigration advocates across disciplines by creating a pipeline of exceptional, diverse reporters and unique reporting.
Our immigration writers develop the skills of leadership, confidence, interpersonal, multilingual communication, interviewing, transcribing, translation, researching, synthesis, outreach to leaders and storytellers, and the development of a network of contacts across the U.S. They also develop the craft of reporting and storytelling with an emphasis on showcasing local perspectives and viewpoints. The most important quality that they possess and cannot be taught, is a true passion and heart for understanding the immigrant experience in the U.S. and interest in immigration policy and debates.
We believe that reporting on problems is crucial—but that impact is magnified if alongside the problems, we report on how people are solving them. These stories can change the tone of public discourse, making it less divisive and more constructive. We seek to contribute a new narrative of immigration in the United States, one that highlights contributions, inspires a reduction of prejudice, and integrates solutions in the immigration debate.
Preferred Skills and Experience: bilingual, passionate about immigration advocacy, strong storytelling abilities, empathy, interview and writing skills, a desire to challenge oneself and to join an intellectually rich community of university writers across the U.S.
